Nickel Belt is a provincial electoral district in Ontario that has been represented in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since 1955. Situated in Northern Ontario, the district covers a wide area surrounding the City of Greater Sudbury, including much of the eastern and southern parts of the Sudbury District and most of Greater Sudbury outside the urban core.
The riding is largely rural and suburban, with communities such as Lively, Onaping, Levack, Dowling, Chelmsford, Naughton, Azilda, Coniston, Wahnapitae, Garson, Val Caron, Val Thérèse, Hanmer, and Capreol. These areas are closely tied to Sudbury’s mining and industrial history, but they also feature a growing number of residential neighborhoods, small businesses, and natural attractions.
Economically, Nickel Belt is known for its strong mining industry, forestry, outdoor tourism, and expanding service sectors. The region is rich in natural resources, while also offering a high quality of life through its lakes, trails, and green spaces.
Politically, Nickel Belt has a long tradition of advocating for Northern Ontario’s unique needs, such as healthcare access, infrastructure, environmental stewardship, and economic diversification. Its communities are active in shaping policies that reflect both the industrial heritage and the modern growth of the region.
