Leadership Election Rules

The Northern Ontario Party is committed to democratic leadership selection, fairness, transparency, accountability, and active member participation in the election of Party leadership.

Purpose

The Leadership Election Rules establish the procedures governing the nomination, campaigning, election, and succession of Party leadership positions. These rules ensure that all eligible members have an opportunity to participate in a fair and transparent democratic process.

Leadership Positions

Leadership elections may be conducted for positions including, but not limited to:

  • Party Leader
  • Party President
  • Executive Officers
  • Board Directors
  • Other positions as determined by Party bylaws and governing regulations

Each elected official serves the Party and its members while advancing the Party’s mission, values, and strategic objectives.

Eligibility to Run

To be eligible for a leadership position, a candidate must:

  • Be a member in good standing of the Party.
  • Meet all eligibility requirements established by Party bylaws.
  • Comply with applicable electoral laws and regulations.
  • Submit all required nomination documents within the prescribed deadlines.
  • Agree to uphold Party principles and codes of conduct.

Nomination Process

Candidates seeking leadership positions must complete the official nomination process. The nomination period shall be announced to Party members in advance and include:

  • Opening and closing dates for nominations.
  • Candidate eligibility review.
  • Submission of nomination forms.
  • Verification of membership status.
  • Publication of approved candidates.

Campaign Rules

Leadership candidates are expected to conduct themselves in a professional, respectful, and ethical manner throughout the election period.

  • Campaign activities must comply with Party policies.
  • Personal attacks and defamatory statements are prohibited.
  • Candidates shall respect fellow candidates and Party members.
  • Campaign materials must be truthful and accurate.
  • Use of Party resources must comply with Party regulations.

Voting Procedures

Leadership elections shall be conducted through a fair and transparent voting process. Eligible Party members may cast votes in accordance with procedures established by the Party Executive and Party Bylaws.

  • Voting methods may include in-person, electronic, or mail-in voting.
  • Each eligible member is entitled to one vote.
  • Votes shall remain confidential.
  • Election results shall be verified before publication.
  • Election outcomes shall be officially announced by the Party.

Term of Office

Individuals elected to leadership positions shall serve for the term established by the Party Bylaws or until a successor is duly elected and assumes office.

Vacancies and Succession

Should a leadership position become vacant before the completion of a term, the Party may appoint an interim replacement or conduct a special election in accordance with Party rules and bylaws.

The Northern Ontario Party believes that strong leadership emerges through open participation, transparency, accountability, and democratic engagement. Leadership elections are conducted to ensure that Party members have a meaningful voice in determining the future direction of the Party.
